HOW TO: Promote Your New Website
After deciding on a domain name, designing a final layout and many weeks of copy editing, not to mention the hours spent coordinating with the developer, the new company website has been launched. It looks great and flawlessly communicates your message, but do people actually know you have a new site? How can you increase awareness without spending a fortune? Check out our tips below:
Be Visible: Whether this is the company’s first website or a change in domain name, promotion should begin by including the web address on everything that contains contact information. This could include adding or updating the web address on company letterhead, branded brochures and other promotional swag such as notepads or pens. Similarly, employees should be encouraged to update business cards and e-mail signatures to reflect the new web address. If the website launch is just a redesign and the domain name is not changing, have employees call attention to the updates by altering the wording before the web address in their e-mail signatures. The website redesign and its address could even be mentioned in the company’s main voice mail message.
Go Online: Increase awareness for the new website by reinforcing the company’s online presence. To start, if this is the company’s first website or you are using a new domain name, update company listings (i.e. Google Places, YellowPages.com) and key directories (i.e. Chamber of Commerce) to include your web address. Likewise, participate in online discussions and provide a link to the company website with each response. This strategy can also be used even if it is not the company’s initial website launch. Social media platforms such as Twitter or Facebook are another tool that can be used to spread the word as well. Read this archived blog to learn how to get the most out of your social media efforts.
Get Noticed: Simply put, tell everyone. Friends, family, professional contacts and so on; let people know the company has a new website. If the website offers something unique such as a resource center or a user community, write a news release to increase awareness. Get the company noticed by speaking at a conference or applying for industry awards—positive publicity and a strategically placed website address can lead to a significant increase in website traffic.
In addition to these tips, encourage visitors to return to the site periodically by providing a bookmark-this-page link or creating a subscription based e-mail that notifies individuals about website updates. As a general rule, new content should be added to your website at least once a month. For more marketing tips visit our Facebook page here.
