Several months ago, Bill Kiefaber was announced as the newest partner of Marketing Works, adding a brilliant marketing mind to the Marketing Works leadership team. Throughout my time knowing Bill, he has always been the utmost professional, providing the MW team and clients with incredible counsel and support. It wasn’t until several weeks ago that I started to get to know Bill on a more personal level, so I decided to author (with Bill’s consent, of course) 10 things you may not know about Bill Kiefaber.
What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?
I ate a live sea urchin once, when I was on a business trip in Japan. Being the youngest person on our team, I was told that it was my obligation to not disappoint our host and try it. I love seafood but this was the most unpleasant thing I have ever eaten – imagine eating a slimy jelly donut filled with poor tasting water.
What is something you do differently than most people?
I love to golf alone super early in the morning. A lot of people play golf for the camaraderie, which I also love to do as well. But, there is something special about getting out on the course before anyone else, walking nine holes, and having time to enjoy the moment, reflect and prepare for the day.
What is the best compliment you could receive?
I believe the highest compliment that one can receive is to be referred to assist someone or an organization that has a challenge/opportunity or is looking for counsel. When that happens you know that you have earned the respect and trust of that individual that provided the referral. You know you have made a difference when that occurs.
What has been the scariest moment of your life?
Taking a leap of faith and starting my own business. It is the most rewarding and yet frightening experience to know that you control your own destiny. I learned that you must trust in yourself and believe that you will succeed.
What is the worst injury you’ve ever had?
I was climbing over a fence to get a volleyball and dislocated my elbow. I blacked out during the fall and came to on the ground knowing that my elbow was not supposed to look that way.
Do you play an instrument?
I tried to play guitar a long time ago, but I wouldn’t consider that ‘playing an instrument.’ My son has perfect pitch and can play any song by ear on the piano. I am very jealous and wish I could share in his gift.
What is your best childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memories are the vacations we took when I was younger. My favorite destination was Lake Huron and spending time on a couple islands in the North Channel. There were no electronics, only time to relax, sail, fish, explore and help to maintain the structures and equipment. It is one of the most beautiful areas in world and I was very fortunate to spend a lot of my summers there.
What is the coolest place you’ve ever traveled?
Sydney, Australia. I’ve been lucky to travel to some very interesting places around the world, but Sydney was incredible. I was there for a total of about six weeks for business. The people were amazing, the city was incredibly vibrant and there are so many different things to experience. From eating dinner next to the Sydney Opera House, to sailing in the bay, to exploring the nature reserves. I would love to return some day with my family and continue to explore.
Did you have any nicknames growing up?
I had many nicknames, but one that stands out is ‘Klobber.’ A classmate at Centerville High School thought my last name was KlobberFlobber, and when she called me that, the nickname Klobber really stuck.
What makes you truly happy?
First, I am incredibly blessed to have an amazing family. My wife Suzy is the most amazing person in the whole world and I am so lucky to be able to spend the rest of my life with her. We have two wonderful children – Liam and Caroline – and they make me smile and laugh each and every day.
I also really enjoy helping others. Whether it is helping a client with a key challenge, helping someone find a job, or assisting a co-worker through a problem, knowing I have been able to make a difference is very rewarding.
