Ask 10 agencies how they build a marketing plan, and you will likely get 10 different answers, most of which boil down to a list of channels they happen to be good at. Social media here, a website refresh there, maybe some email campaigns stitched together under the label of “strategy.” The problem is that a pile of tactics is not a plan, and a plan without a repeatable process behind it tends to fall apart the moment priorities shift.
At Marketing Works, we built something different: the MW-360 IDEA Process. It is the backbone of our go-to-market planning work and one of the clearest ways we differentiate ourselves from agencies that lead with tools rather than thinking.
What IDEA Actually Stands For
The name is not a marketing gimmick. It describes four distinct phases that every engagement moves through, in order, for a reason.
Identify. Before we write a single piece of content or launch a single campaign, we take the time to figure out what actually resonates with your audience. This means primary research, such as team interviews, client and prospect conversations, and analyst input, paired with secondary research, such as competitor scans and market assessments. We are not guessing at opportunities. We are finding them.
Define. Once we know what we are working with, we determine the strategy and align the messaging behind it. This is where a company’s story gets translated into language its buyers actually respond to—something we dig into further on our content marketing and messaging page.
Engage. This is the execution phase, where inbound and outbound marketing efforts go to work capturing and converting the audiences we identified in the first phase. Nothing here is disconnected from the research that came before it.
Assess. Finally, we benchmark results and continuously measure outcomes, then reassess goals and objectives quarterly rather than letting a strategy sit untouched for a year.
Why Order Matters
The reason this process works is that each phase depends on the one before it. Skip the research, and your messaging is a guess. Skip the messaging alignment, and your campaigns speak the wrong language to the right people. Skip the reassessment, and you keep running a strategy built for circumstances that no longer exist.
This is a meaningful departure from how many agencies operate, where the “strategy” conversation happens once at kickoff and is never revisited until the contract comes up for renewal. Our clients get weekly metric alignment against their goals and a quarterly checkpoint to adjust course, which means the plan stays tied to reality instead of becoming a document nobody opens again.
A Process, Not a Personality
There is also something to be said for consistency. Plenty of agencies deliver good work because a particular strategist happens to be sharp. That is great until that person leaves or gets pulled onto another account. Because MW-360 IDEA is a documented process rather than one person’s instinct, the quality of thinking behind your marketing does not depend on any single person. You can read more about how this shows up across different client relationships on our our work page, and see the philosophy behind it laid out in full on our about page.
A process is only a differentiator if it produces different results, and that is really the point. IDEA is not a slide in a pitch deck. It is the actual sequence of work behind every go-to-market plan we build, which is why our clients tend to know exactly why a campaign exists, who it is for, and how they will know if it worked.
